A poem about the experience leading up to the image below:
Middle of the Atlantic
Short ferry ride,
a new island.
Exploratory walk,
blazing sun,
improper footwear.
Complaining. Resistance.
A total lack of enthusiasm
like a 40-year-old toddler.
Thankfully, a water fountain.
And then:
Coming around the corner,
the volcano
half-climbed
quite suddenly reveals her
Magic.
Rough rock wall,
laced with silver
and flecked with gold.
More divine than
any cathedral I’ve seen.
Awe-struck
eyes lingering, shutter firing
capturing
documenting
drinking it in.
Touching - gently,
reverently.
Tears silently materializing
in disbelief.
And then:
The crowning glory
- not three inches tall -
the most delicate
tiny
fiery orange flower.
Alone.
In the middle of nowhere.
Halfway up a volcano
in the middle of the Atlantic.
